Filed under: Random Thoughts, Web Observations — Gede @ 12:01 pm Pagerank, the Google patented algorythm of assigning a value to a webpage is not showing in the Google toolbar at the moment of writing. Webmasters all over the world are speculating what is happening at Google. Already for years the little green bar is a way to judge pages. A high value on your page is telling you something about your popularity, if a lot of pages link to your page, some of the pagerank those pages have is transferred to your page and your green bar grows.
The pagrank that shows on the Google toolbar is just an indication, and has just a bit to do with the real pageranking system of Google. In some cases the true pagrank of a page is not shown on the toolbar, like with dynamic generated pages.
Of course, webmasters started to trade in pagerank, and the system became corrupt for a part. Google guards the system and constantly makes adjustments to the ranking system, and sometimes even adjusts pagerank by hand to make things right.
Google filed a patent for a new system to judge pages, called Trustrank. No doubt that webmasters will find a way to corrupt this system in one or another way, when it becomes available.
Next step may be will be a system called Peoplerank, where a large force of people all over the world will judge sites and pages by hand in one or another way. Of course webmasters would be excluded.
But for now Pagrank is down, not showing on the toolbar. With all the speculation going on, I would like to add my theory: They want a new color for the pagerank, and they cannot decided wich one. Green is out of the question, because its too much associated with money….
